LINUX Newbie.

Are you new to Linux? If so, then this is a good place to start!

LINUX Newbie.

Postby Magpie on September 13th, 2008, 7:58 am

Good morning all,

I have a brand new PC just waiting to accommodate a O/S. I would like to have a crack at LINUX and need to know from those with the 'know how' where I begin.

I am reasonably computer savvy but this will be the first time that I have strayed from MS and not having O/S CD. How/where do I get LINUX/SUSE from, please

Best wishes and thanks for any/all assistance.

You will need to decide on what sort of setup you want.

1. Dual-boot between Windows and Linux (where you can select which OS to boot into at startup)
2. Just have linux as the only OS
3. Install Linux into a Virtual Machine (using VirtualBox or Vmware)

For option 1, you will need to repartition your HD so that windows sits on one partition and leave some free space (eg. 10 GB) for Linux to install its own partitions. This can be done using PartitionMagic or some linux distro's will allow you to shrink your existing partitions (backup your important files in case something goes wrong). Then the linux distro will install a boot menu so you can choose which OS to boot into.

Option 2 is the simplest. No need to repartition. Just wipe the whole disk and install.

Option 3 is also simple. Install VirtualBox in windows, create a new VM with some HD, and install linux into that. This is the non-destructive method and will give you a taste of linux without touching your Windows installation. Linux will run a little slower since it is being emulated.

To get linux, you can download the distro ISO from their respective sites. eg.

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.ubuntu.com

Just burn the DVD ISO image and boot of it to install.

Hi Magpie,

Linux is a freeware unlike other Operating System. It is one of its great advantage compared to its rival OS which is the Windows.

Cracks of this OS is all over the internet, your task would just be to find the right one that will surely work and is not downloaded with a virus. That's the common thing about torrent uploads, they tend to integrate viruses. This way they take the advantage of providing the aid for it and get paid. So always check the sources.

If bent on going with openSUSE and not used to not using a disc to install from and if one doen't have a good high-speed ISP, then I recommend going to http://www.osdisc.com and ordering both the install DVD and the repositories. This will set one back about $30 US, but the savings in download times, a bad burn, and general hassle are probably worth it to you.

Repositories for SUSE are huge (I believe they come on five DVDs) and having the library at-hand is the way I would go.

Please put each OS on its own hard drive too. As a newbie, the frustrations of learning to chainload the boot loader can wail until later unless there exists a propensity for self-flagellation in your genetic make-up.

SUSE is a very nice desktop (possibly the best rendition of the new KDE to-date). Good choice!

Osdisc and http://www.distrowatch.com are both excellent sources of information on Linux distributions.

Welcome to the Linux world, where things are both gratis and libre!

I used to run it, and I thought I remembered a certain type of intellectual property argument in a browser, which worked well, but apparently my memory is faulty. It turns out that it seems to work when I write the address in Windows Explorer. Guess that's all I need now.

LINUX is actually one of the best OS in terms of computers. Unfortunately I have not yet used this software yet. I am used to have windows as my OS.
