linux server, winxp client, localhost

setup: all works fine when all using DHCP
router
WinXP SP3, client
RH variant Linux, server

running Oracle on this server requires either localhost or a static IP, but static IP cuts off internet (no browser, no email, etc). localhost reference works for Oracle, and I can put FQDN in /etc/hosts, this allows router dhcp to work and allows connection to internet.

Burning question: some application on the client wants to talk to Oracle on the server, what is the server reference that otherwise would have been the static IP? How is the server named on the client so it resolves to Oracle on the server? What entry should be in the WinXP hosts file? My router does not do dhcp reservations.
