Which Linux distributions are appropriate for people new to linux?
What are the pros/cons of the major distributions that might affect newbies?

I would recommend Ubuntu or openSUSE since these distors are well polished and everything works well out-of-the-box. On the other hand, I would not recommend Fedora for a new Linux user since their releases are less polished.

I would recommend Fedora. Everything just works.

Fedora works well inside the box, which is what we want afterall.
