Large vertical spaces between section title and body

Postby james on February 12th, 2008, 10:51 pm

I am getting a problem where there are large spaces between the title of a section or subsection and the body (e.g. 5 lines worth of empty space) which
makes it look horrible. It also happens around images, i.e. way too much space between the bottom of the caption and the top of the text continuing from the previous page. I suspect it is related to widow/orphan protection or some such but i do not know how to prevent it from putting such large gaps in.

any ideas? how do i turn of widow/orphan protection? does latex even have this?

I noticed this and there is a quick fix. I dont remember the command at the moment but I'll let you know when I have a look at my thesis.tex file.

OK, what I did was just put some \vfill commands at the end of sections that have the gaps.
