How to change equation, figure and table numbering in LaTeX?

how do I adjust the default equation, figure and table numbering behaviour in LaTeX? f.e. Eq. 1.2 vs Eq. 1.2.1 Please include simple examples.

for equation numbering:
Code: Select all
\numberwithin{equation}{section}

change 'section' to 'subsection' to go from e.g. 1.1, 1.2 to 1.3.1, 1.3.2 etc.
i think you can also use
Code: Select all
\numberwithin{figure}{section}
\numberwithin{table}{chapter}

etc.
Just put these lines at the top of the latex document.
